Inter Milan, EDB Discuss Economic and Sporting Goals

Massimo Moratti

Inter Milan owner and President Massimo Moratti will today meet with Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa, Chief Executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB), as part of a wider visit to promote economic and sporting ties.

A delegation from the reigning Italian and European champions is in Manama to hold meetings with the EDB, business leaders and the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC).  Joining the Inter President is 2001 FIFA World Player of the Year Luis Figo, once named by Brazilian legend Pelé in ‘The FIFA 100’ list of the greatest living footballers and now Inter Director.

Shaikh Mohammed said: “We are delighted to welcome the Inter Milan delegation to Bahrain, particularly on the back of the club’s treble winning season and fifth successive Serie A title.  This visit reflects the Kingdom’s growing reputation as a promising business, investment and tourism destination at the heart of the trillion dollar Gulf market.”

The visit has been co-organised by the EDB and the BOC and includes sightseeing tours of Bahraini landmark tourism and heritage sites.  Luis Figo and former Inter and Italy international goalkeeper Francesco Toldo were seen signing autographs from 17:00 – 18:00 yesterday at the City Centre Mall.

Bahrain’s own national football team narrowly missed out on qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup earlier this year.  But a different sport will draw the attention of a global audience to the Kingdom on 13 March 2011 as The Bahrain Grand Prix again kicks off the FIA Formula One World Championship.  Long the region’s flagship sporting, social and business event, the race showcases Bahrain’s own track record as the most established financial centre in the Gulf.

Such events and a growing tourism sector have a key role to play in achieving the ambitions of Bahrain’s Vision 2030, the blueprint for the development of the country’s economy, government and wider society over the coming decades.  The Kingdom is now two years into the process, which the EDB is leading under the guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince of Bahrain and Chairman of the EDB.
